Our School Mission in action
Our school mission is in every classroom and on every wall. We believe the children can be truly brilliant and we all work hard to give them every opportunity so that they have the skills, qualities and qualifications to be able to go onto University or start a career of their choice. Here are three stories about life at Norton from the last two weeks which sum up what the school’s mission is about in real terms.
This week I learnt that 70% of our current Year 13 have applied to go to University. This is an amazing statistic as only seven years ago it was 40%. It reflects so well on students’ aspirations. In addition, the sixth form team ensure that students receive the right guidance to give them the knowledge, confidence and skills to place an application. Amongst these year 13 students is Gemma Brazil who has been offered a place at Cambridge to study English. Gemma decided to apply after encouragement by the sixth form team to attend a Summer school. Also this week, I received a letter from Hannah Magowan a former student who informed me she had been entered into the National finals for Apprentice of the Year. Competing against 1800 students Hannah was highly commended for her passion for both engineering and her apprenticeship.
Show week at Norton revealed a multitude of stars from the student body. On stage and behind set it was brilliant to see so many students have the self-belief and hard work to want to be involved in such a rewarding experience. The cast and crew of Legally Blonde are enjoying an amazing week and I know the memories will stay with them forever.
Finally, we saw the launch of two international trips for the future, one to Berlin and one to Southern India. We are so lucky at Norton to have staff who are prepared to invest their time and energy into researching and promoting such enhancements to the curriculum.
