Looking back to look forward
The 2015 performance tables were published this month. While many parents do not rely on them to inform their decisions on which school to choose, if they did look at them they would find that on lots of measures both our sixth form and main school compare very favourably to local schools.
Results at Norton both at GCSE and Sixth Form were record breaking. Students in Year 11 achieved 72% A*- C including English and maths. However, the performance tables only capture some of this fantastic achievement. They show that 64% of students achieved A*- C In English and maths at their first attempt, but just as some of us sit our driving test a second time and pass, we think that some children should be given more than one chance to sit these important examinations. This best entry is not reported in these tables.
If parents and prospective students wish, they can now compare our sixth form results with other schools and colleges. It shows that average grades in both BTEC courses and A level are higher at Norton than elsewhere. Encouragingly for all students, there is no need to travel away from Norton to secure a good sixth form education whatever the course.
These GCSE and Sixth Form record breaking results at Norton are a significant achievement for both students and staff. Due to the new focus on the progress for all students, we believe an Ofsted inspector would call them “Outstanding!”
It is a privilege to lead a school where staff always seem to look forward to a new challenge and are motivated to want to climb a new mountain of achievement in 2016.
