Inspiring the Future Code-Breakers
An original, fully working World War II Enigma machine proved taxing for students and staff alike when members of GCHQ visited the Maths Department at Norton College.
The pupils had developed an interest in the goings-on at Bletchley Park following a recent trip to see The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, on the big screen. The afternoon looked at the history of coding, right up to when Alan Turing cracked the Enigma with his machine, The Bombe. The students were able to look at many coding resources including laptop programs, Morse code, the Enigma machine itself as well as investigate the mind of Alan Turing by reading through the once classified journal in which he broke the Enigma code.
